Unite the Tribes, 28 December 2024

Last year, the Gurdjieff Society of Newport hosted a Zoom meeting, wherein all of Beelzebub’s tribe could be part of one international virtual-gathering. Here is the post which related to it. http://www.josephazize.com/2023/07/08/what-can-it-be-to-unite-beelzebubs-tribe/  We are renewing the initiative.

I would add that since the conference hosted by the Center for Study of World Religions at Harvard University on 4 and 5 December this year, the need is even greater. For what it is worth, that event had two sides: one aspect was that it showed that there were possibilities of groups of diverse lineages coming together. That was very good. But the other side is that it showed how far away we are from doing more than assembling under one roof. For example, certain people would come up and introduce themselves, and firmly move on before conversation could be opened. Or one might open a conversation, to find that the overture was politely left hanging. Also, not everyone was invited to the showing of a film on the 6th, and then, I am told, many from the Foundation were not present: they had their own special event. I was not there that evening – I did not know of it until late on the evening of the 5th. But some who went told me, and they were disappointed in this. I mention this not to complain: I have no legitimate complaint. But there were missed opportunities, and it is up to us not to let this bother us, but to push on.

It is, I think, critical to the inner effort to honestly acknowledge what happens, and to remain impartial to it: not to paint it either too dark or too light; and not to take it personally – people usually make what efforts they can. If the effort falls short, they were unable to do more. There is no giving or taking of offence: people act as conditioned, but I am responsible for responding and for responding better than I might have.

To that end, here is our effort – something that all of Gurdjieff’s pupils can join in. Some of the Gurdjieff music at the beginning and the end, and Ken Adie, who met Gurdjieff several times when a child, reading “My First Tutor” from Meetings with Remarkable Men. We shall also have a short contemplative exercise from Mr Adie.
